Church of Santa Maria di Fossale in Gemona
Near Gemona Cathedral, on Via dei Conti, the street parallel to Via Bini, stands theChurch of the Holy Name of Mary - Chiesa del Santo Nome di Maria, also known as Santa Maria di Fossale– rebuilt in 1993. The museum visit includes this church, containing two precious gilded and painted portal-type wooden altars, most likely byGerolamo Comuzzoand his workshop, with altarpieces by painterMelchiorre Widmar dating back to the 1660s or ’70s. The altarpiece on the main altar frames a prodigious fresco of the Virgin nursing the Christ child, which was seen to weep in the year 1655.
The artwork of greatest interest in the church is definitely a noble Thirteenth-century crucifixof painted wood, formerly in the church of San Giovanni, placed against the background of the Virgin in a swoon and the suffering, the work of early eighteenth-century Gemonese artistGiovanni Battista Tiani.
