The year 1976, with the earthquakes of May and September, dramatically marked the recent history of Gemona and Friuli as a whole: the many victims, the magnificent historic plazas devastated, the social and economic tissues destroyed.
The terrible destruction, however, was followed by an incredible work of reconstruction that allowed one to find in its deep roots the strength to rise unanimously. This page would have never been written without the fundamental contribution of ALPINI, on duty and on leave. The interesting exhibition material was made available by the ARMY GENERAL STAFF, by witnesses of that tragic event, as well as through the archival materials preserved and digitized by the prestigious “CINETECA DEL FRIULI” and the wards kept by the JULIA ALPINE BRIGADE (Brigata Alpina Julia), the 3rd LAND ARTILLERY REGIMENT, the ANA SECTION OF ROME and private collectors.
The ANA is also responsible for organizing the 11 ‘work sites’ that transformed the wounds of the earthquake and helped the destroyed communities.
Gemona and Friuli are thus reborn: thanks to an exemplary recovery, the participation of the people and the work of the institutions, known all over the world as “FRIULI MODEL”
ALPINI: an indispensable contribution
About 15,000 volunteers mobilized to provide support, relief and to givehope despite the difficulties and tragedies that hit Friuli hard that evening of May 1976 (and subsequently on September 11th and September 15th of the same year) becoming real moral pillars, a gesture of love and compassion for their own land and its inhabitants, who still remember them and thank them with affection and admiration for their dedication in helping in addition to their duty. They not only represent the oldest active Mountain Infantry Corps in the world: they also represent strength, courage and above all generosity.
